This suburb carries its Assyrian, Iraqi, Vietnamese and Chinese heritage openly, and doubles as the administrative heart of the wider council area.

Trains have stopped here since 1856, one of the oldest platforms in the state, and the housing nearby still shows its age. Modest weatherboard-and-fibro cottages line streets like Smart Street and Ware Street, some raised before the war and some soon after it.

Closer to the town centre, three levels of flat blocks from the 1960s through the 80s take over, with newer apartments going up nearer the platform.

One pipe material turns up more than any other in those older cottages: earthenware sewer junctions. They were never built to outlast a century, and the joints are now failing quietly, letting roots and grit into the line until it finally chokes.

It rarely announces itself with a bang. More often it's a bath taking an extra minute to empty, right up until the morning it doesn't empty at all, which is exactly the stage blocked drain repair is built to catch.

The suburb's town centre hasn't slowed down. Fairfield Chase went through a major redevelopment in 2025, and the Showground a short walk away still fills up for a weekly Saturday market that's been a fixture for years.

Add the local RSL club, known for its South East Asian themed frontage, and the Cambridge Tavern trading round the clock nearby, and this part of the suburb rarely goes quiet, even while the cottages a block or two back sit exactly as old as they've always been.

The Crescent Park nearby stays busy too, another reminder that people have stuck around here for a long time rather than passing through.

None of that foot traffic changes what's underground behind it. The commercial strip runs on comparatively modern pipework, while the older homes just behind it are still connected by the same earthenware and clay their first owners had laid.

The mix of houses and units close to all of that activity means plenty of different drain setups within a few streets of each other, from a single house's full run to a shared line serving several flats.

It's the same story a few streets over and a few streets further out, wherever an original building line has never had its plumbing touched.
